Gatekeeping

Shoemaker and Vos (2009) 'in exercising it "surveillance" function, every news medium (sector) has a large number of stories brought to its attention daily by reporters, wire services, and variety of other sources.
News provides us information.

• The editor acts as the gatekeeper, the articles are chosen by the editor, this means they can be bias based on the editors personal experiences.
• Protective coverage is the way the gatekeeper select news to publish in order to prevent certain information reaching a mass audience. This material that may be harmful either figures of power (politicians/goverment) or the audience.
• Web 2.0 allows users to produce and (re)distributing online news items through social media networks such as twitter or facebook. this allows users to manipulate content according to their needs and interests.
